ROOK’S RECAP 9.0

EXTENDED “UPSET SPECIAL”  EDITION

It’s all just a little bit of

History Repeating

-                                                                 The Propeller-heads, 1998

THE LEAD ITEM:

TWO WORDS: Deja. Vu.

Nobody thought it would happen again but the Miami Dolphins shocked the world! They were the David to Chicago’s Goliath…again. But here’s why this latest upset outweighs the 1985 upset.

1985: The game was in Miami on a Monday night. It’s easier to win at home. An even bigger advantage when it’s in primetime on a Monday Night

2006: The game was in Chicago. Chicago hadn’t lost in 10 previous home games at Soldier field.

1985: The Dolphins had Dan Marino. 14/27 for 270 yds and 2 TD’s with 1 INT

2006: The enigma: Joey Harrington: 16/32 for for 137 yds and 3 TD’s with 2 INT’s

1985: Miami was good. Defending AFC East champs and battling for 1st in AFC east

2006: Miami stinks. 1-6 record and in the basement of the NFL.

So, we just witnessed the biggest upset in the history of the Miami Dolphins. We now have something to take away from this dismal year.

THE GAME

Well it doesn’t get any better than this if you’re a Dolphins fan. It felt good to see the other team shooting themselves in the foot time after time. But Miami deserved that win. The Defense-led by JT-was wicked. Even the defensive backs played well. For the first time I can say the name of Miami’s first round pick: here we go…..Jason Allen played well. (He exists!!!!!)  Ronnie Brown ran for the hardest 157 yards I’ve ever seen. The only thing that really got to me was the penalties on 4th down. It did add some suspense to the game but I for one didn’t need it.

FINAL SCORE: MIAMI 31 CHICAGO 13

Cheers to: Channing Crowder. Awesome hit on Grossman. Helmet-to-Helmet my ass!!

Jeers to: David Bowens. Stupid penalty on special teams.

Ally’s All-star Dolphin: Jason Taylor

Dawg-o-Meter: 9 ½

THE GAME OUTSIDE THE GAME:

The game aired on CBS. Greg Gumbel and Dan Deirdorf called the game.

I watched the game at The Oasis sports bar in Halifax, NS. The only ones watching the game were me and 5 hardcore Bears fans. Everytime I cheered I got the stink-eye from the group. One by one, as the seconds ticked down, the Bears fans left. Until it was just me, The Rook, cheering on Ronnie Brown to get as many yards as he could. AWESOME!!

Melanie’s quote of the week: No trouble to tell Greg Gumbel grew up in Chicago. At the end of the game he said this:

''Don't make the mistake of thinking the Bears were looking forward to an undefeated season, Lovie Smith doesn't allow that.''

Wrong Gumbel. Said Smith after the Arizona miracle win: "Sometimes, when you're a team of destiny, things like that happen.”

Eat it Gumbel. Eat it Chicago. Miami has your number.

JUNGLE JIM’S PLAY OF THE GAME

Jason Taylor's Int returned for a TD.   Shocked the Bears by giving the Dolphins a 14-3 lead!
